Elevating your pour with essential enhancements
Discover how the right bitters, syrups, and garnishes can transform your bourbon and mixed drinks from good to extraordinary. At Pizzoferrato Oak Aged Spirits, we believe that quality ingredients are the foundation of a truly exceptional home bar experience.

The crucial role of quality ingredients
High-quality ingredients will not only work with, but enhance the quality of your bourbon or mixed drink. Many believe that the main spirit is the only thing that matters, but the supporting flavors and aromas are equally vital in creating a balanced and delightful beverage. Investing in superior bitters, syrups, and garnishes elevates the entire drinking experience, making each sip more enjoyable.

Syrups and Bitters: sweetening with sophistication
Syrups are more than just sugar and water; they add depth, body, and complex flavor profiles to your cocktails. From rich demarara to nuanced fruit-infused varieties, the right syrup can complement the oak and caramel notes of bourbon, creating a symphony of flavors. We advocate for choosing artisanal syrups crafted with natural ingredients for a noticeable difference in taste. Bitters are one of the oldest and original ways to add spice and flavor to drinks aging back to the late 1700s.
Old Limestone Water- now this may seem a little strange but many say that Kentucky's Bourbon stands out because over 50% of the surface rock in Kentucky is Limestone. Limestone has been found to naturally rid water of iron and add minerals to the water it touches which aids in yeast fermentation. The link provided is from a family owned company called Old Limestone that bottles and ships this same Kentucky Water used by Kentucky's Master Distillers and biggest distilleries right to your door. It is excellent for making ice cubes, when doing a dilution prior to adding to a barrel/bottle to add or finish, or even to add just a few drops when doing a tasting as it helps open up the aroma of higher proof drinks.
Orange and Aromatic Bitters- Angostura is a very well-known brand and has been producing bitters since 1824. Aromatic and Orange are must haves for your home bar.
Chocolate and Other Flavor Bitters- Woodford Reserve Distillery has become known for their bitters that they make on-site at the distillery for their high spice and variety of flavors.
Demerara Sugar- is one of the best types of sugars to use to melt into simple syrup or sugar cubes for bourbon drinks. It produces a beautify brown color and has strong hints of brown sugar and molasses which brings bourbons cocktails to life.

Garnishes: the finishing touch
Garnishes are not merely decorative; they contribute aromatics and sometimes even subtle flavors that enhance the overall sensory experience of your drink. A perfectly expressed orange peel, a plump Luxardo cherry, or a fresh sprig of mint can elevate a simple bourbon cocktail into a masterpiece. Always prioritize fresh, high-quality garnishes for the best results.
Blood Oranges- are my favorite as far as a dried orange but the reality nothing is better than a fresh orange for a cocktail even for the soul purpose of being able to express the oils into your drink.
Luxardo Cherries- set the standard for cocktails all the way back 1905 when the Luxardo Liquor was being used to candy cherries for mix drinks.
Filthy Cherries- came about in 2007 and have been the next best thing since a Luxardo.
Quality over quantity: the golden rule
Most bourbon drinks are made with simple ingredients to supplement. So when it comes to these items, quality is always more important than quantity or cost. Investing in premium bitters, syrups, and garnishes ensures a superior cocktail experience, making every homemade drink taste like it came from a professional mixologist. Choose wisely, drink better.
